Tarout Island - 5000 years of history!

Tarout Island is as one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in the Arabian Gulf. Archaeological finds provide evidence that human settlement on the island dates back more than 5,000 years to 4300AD and the Obaid civilization. The ancient Arabic name for the place was apparently 'Ishtarut (عشتروت) which has now become Tarout. The island today features the prominent Portuguese castle, native white donkeys the size of small horses and dozens of historic items including boats and doors in traditional neighborhoods now being preserved.

Just across the bridge in Qatif find Abu Loza’s bath (sulphur springs dating back to the grandson of Noah), the locally famous Khamis market on Saturday and numerous private museums and farms.

Tarout is and always was an important oasis and agricultural center along the Gulf.

Great location for exploring and the kids will love it!
